William Leavitt (born in 1941, Washington, D.C. ; lives and works in Los Angeles)

William Leavitt, a pioneering Conceptual artist who has been working in Los Angeles since the late 1960s, probes the familiar and strange—often uncanny—surroundings of postwar Los Angeles life. He chooses backdrops of L.A. architecture, the open California landscape and unpopulated domestic interiors against which narratives are subtly suggested—in his photographs, drawings, and paintings—or develop curiously through the inclusion of written text or dialogue, as in his tableaux, theater, and video. Also at play in Leavitt’s continuing exploration of “the theater of the ordinary” is the coexistence of nature and artifice, exemplified first by such important historical works as Wind Sound and Forest Sound (both 1970) and California Patio (1972). His presentations of vernacular culture are often infused with deadpan humor, achieved either through the seemingly random juxtapositions of figurative elements in his drawings, paintings, and photographs or via the sly stories that unfold in his installations, plays, and videos.
