Matthew Wong (born in 1984 in Toronto, Canada, lives and works in Edmonton, Canada)

Matthew Wong explores the materiality of paint; his practice is an extensive investigation into the act of painting as a vehicle for the discovery of existential truths. Working without preconceived ideas or guidelines, he seeks to apply a vast array of painterly techniques, with an emphasis on experimentation and intuition that is nevertheless keenly aware of a wide variety of art historical precedents, ranging from classical Chinese paintings, the pulsating brushstrokes of Chaim Soutine and Vincent Van Gogh, to the internal subjectivity of Abstract Expressionism. The artist's practise also encompasses poetry that brings to mind artistic and non-artistic references, something familiar but also a bit foreign and unknowable much like Wong’s paintings.

Matthew Wong explore la matérialité de la peinture. Sa pratique est une investigation au long cours du geste pictural en tant que vecteur de découverte de vérités existentielles. Travaillant sans idées préconçues ni directives, il explore une grande variété de techniques picturales, accordant une part importante à l’expérimentation et à l’intuition tout en demeurant profondément conscient des multiples figures qui l’ont précédé dans l’Histoire de l’art, allant des peintures Chinoises traditionnelles et des traits de pinceaux vibrants de Chaim Soutine et Vincent Van Gogh jusqu'à la subjectivité de l’Expressionisme Abstrait. L'artiste possède également une pratique poétique qui convoque des références à la fois artistiques et non-artistiques, relevant du familier mais aussi d'une part d'inconnu, à l'image de ses peintures.
