Tomislav Gotovac (born in 1937 ; Sombor, Kingdom of Yugoslavia, now Serbia ; died in 2010, Zagreb, Croatia)

The Croatian artist Tomislav Gotovac is considered the precursor of performance art in Eastern Europe in the 1960's and the 1970's. He attended the University of Zagreb and the Academy of Performing Arts in Belgrade. He was fascinated by cinema, which had a deep influence on his work; as he said so himself, he perceived life as a constant movie : “when I open my eyes in the morning, I see a movie”. Gotovac's own body as a readymade soon became his main medium and subject, when it appeared in his photographies in the 1960's; he also worked on his body on the public space, often naked, doing performances in the streets of Zagreb such as Zagreb, I Love You in 1981. He also worked with collage, and was at the origin of the first Happening in Zagreb, in 1967 (Happ Our-Happening). 

L'artiste croate Tomislav Gotovac est considéré comme le précurseur de la performance en Europe de l'Est dans les années 1960 et 1970. Il étudia à l'université de Zagreb et à l'Académie des arts du spectacle de Belgrade. Il était fasciné par le cinéma, ce qui eut une influence profonde sur son travail ; comme il le disait lui-même, il percevait la vie comme un film incessant : « quand j'ouvre les yeux le matin, je vois un film ». Son propre corps, en tant que readymade, devint vite le matériau et le sujet principal de ses œuvres, à partir du moment où il apparut dans ses photographies dans les années 1960. Il travailla aussi sur son corps, souvent nu, au sein de l'espace public, par des performances prenant place dans les rues de Zagreb telles que Zagreb, I Love You en 1981. Il travailla également avec le collage et fut à l'initiative du premier happening à avoir lieu à Zageb, en 1967 (Happ Our-Happening).
