galerie frank elbaz is proud to announce the participation of Tomislav Gotovac in documenta 14, in Athens and Kassel.
Documents, props and photographs of his action Cleaning of Public Space (1981) are on view at EMST National Museum of Contemporary Art, Athens through July 16.
During the 1980s, Gotovac carried out a number of performances in the city of Zagreb, in which he mocked ideologies of mass docility imposed by the government. On May 28, 1981 from 4 to 6pm, he cleaned the pavement on Brotherhood and Unity Square (today Petar Preradović Square). This action, titled “Cleaning of Public Space”, was dedicated to Vjekoslav Frece who was known as “Bolshevik” and “The Apostle of Cleanliness”. Gotovac provoked the socialist state by enacting an apparently simple everyday task.
Begging (Alms Please. Thank You. Begging Artist) (1980) will be presented at the Neue Galerie Kassel, from June 10 to September 17.
