Mangelos (born in 1921 in Sid, Serbia ; died in 1987 in Zagreb, Croatia)

Dimitrije Bašičević was an art historian, a critic, a museum director but also an artist under the pseudonym Mangelos. He studied history of art and philosophy in Vienna and in Zagreb. During the Second World War, he used to draw a black square in one of his school notebooks each time he learned about the death of a relative or a friend. These black squares became blackboards to cover with notes – poems, thoughts, quotations linked to his theoretical work. Indeed, after his graduation in 1949, he held several important institutional posts such as curator of the Modern Gallery; from 1962 to 1964, he also directed the Gallery of Primitive Art that he cofounded in 1952. He became a key-member of the avant-garde group Gorgona in Zagreb, until 1966. Mangelos is famous for having organized numerous exhibitions and published essays and art reviews, doing much to promote abstract art. 

Dimitrije Bašičević était historien de l'art, critique, directeur de musée mais aussi artiste sous le pseudonyme Mangelos. Il étudia l'histoire de l'art et la philosophie à Vienne et à Zagreb. Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il dessinait un carré noir dans un de ses cahiers d'école à chaque fois qu'il apprenait la mort d'un proche ou d'un ami. Ces carrés noirs devinrent des tableaux à recouvrir de notes : des poèmes, des pensées, ou des citations liées à son activité théorique. Après avoir reçu son diplôme en 1949, il occupa en effet plusieurs postes institutionnels importants, comme celui de curator de la Modern Gallery de Zagreb ; de 1962 à 1964, il dirigea la Galerie de l'art primitif qu'il avait contribué à fonder en 1952. Il devint un membre clé du groupe d'avant-garde Gorgona à Zagreb, jusqu'en 1966. Mangelos est célèbre pour avoir organisé de nombreuses expositions et pour avoir publié des essais et des magazines d'art, oeuvrant activement à promouvoir l'art abstrait.
